Western societies are sleep deprived, and, as a result people, are becoming clumsy, stupid, unhappy and dead according to Dr Stanley Coren (author of The Sleep Thieves). Social observers have coined the term TATT Syndrome to describe people that are Tired All The Time. Whether you buy in to such phraseology the condition seems real enough and sleep is set to be one of the next big social and medical issues. The figures certainly speak for themselves. Back in 1900 Americans slept for an average of 9.0 hours every night. The figure is now 6.9 hours. In Australia there were 4 sleep clinics in 1985. The number is now 70. In the New York there is even a company called Metro Naps that sells sleep to stressed out city types (US $14 for 15 minutes).
To be a consistently effective trader, it is crucial to have balance in your life. One part of this is getting adequate sleep with enough time to allow you to dream. This dreaming phase of sleep, called REM ( rapid eye movement) may not be recalled by you upon awakening, but is absolutely critical to sustained mental health. In addition, you will often get some of your best ideas during sleep, even though you are not aware of it until you are awake. Author Lewis Carroll is said to have conceived his idea for Alice in Wonderland while dreaming.
If you have trouble turning your mind off and falling asleep at night, try inhaling or tiny local application of oil of lavender or a 20-minute yoga and meditation practice. There are a number of organic decaffeinated and flower teas which may help relax you. If you have early morning awakening on a regular basis, it may be a sign of depression. Avoid prescription sleeping medication as most are addictive and may interfere with the clarity of mind needed to trade well. Also, avoid stimulants such as caffeine and caffeinated tea as well as heavy food intake at least three hours prior to sleep.
Make yourself a promise to start giving yourself a wonderful gift every day.....Restful consistent sleep. Let me know how you feel and if you think this has improved your trading and your way of just being in the world? |
