Newport Corporation engages in the development and sale of lasers, components, instruments, subsystems, and systems. It operates through three segments: Lasers, Photonics and Precision Technologies (PPT), and Advanced Packaging and Automation Systems (APAS). The Lasers segment offers diode-pumped solid-state lasers, ultrafast lasers, oscillators and amplifiers, high-energy pulsed lasers, tunable lasers, semiconductor lasers, high-power water-cooled ion lasers, air-cooled ion lasers, nitrogen lasers, and high-power helium neon lasers to original equipment manufacturers and end-user customers in the microelectronics, scientific research, life and health sciences, and industrial manufacturing markets. The PPT segment offers light sources, and monochromators and spectroscopy instrumentation; and thin-film optical filters, and ruled and holographic diffraction gratings and crystals. It also sells subsystems to third parties that integrate these products into larger systems, particularly for semiconductor manufacturing and life and health sciences applications. In addition, this segment offers automated and manually operated equipment used to assemble and test fiber optic telecommunications and data communications devices, addressing applications from pretest to assembly and packaging to final device testing. The PPT segment's photonics and precision products address microelectronics, scientific research, aerospace and defense/security, life and health sciences, and communications markets. The APAS segment offers an array of automation subsystem products for semiconductor front-end wafer processing applications, as well as supplies turnkey systems for advanced back-end packaging applications. The company markets its products and services through its sales organizations, a network of independent distributors and sales representatives, technical catalogs, and Web site. Newport Corporation was founded in 1938 and is headquartered in Irvine, California.
