Terra Industries, Inc. (Terra) engages in the production and marketing of nitrogen products and methanol for agricultural and industrial end use markets in the United States and the United Kingdom. The company's Nitrogen segment offers anhydrous ammonia, urea ammonium nitrate solutions, and ammonium nitrate for agricultural end users. Terra's Methanol segment produces methanol primarily from natural gas that is used as a feedstock in the production of formaldehyde, acetic acid, MTBE, and a variety of other chemical intermediates. Formaldehyde is used to produce urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde resins, which are used as wood adhesives for plywood, particleboard, oriented strand board, medium-density fiberboard, and other engineered wood products. In addition, formaldehyde is used in the manufacture of elastomers, paints, foams, polyurethane, and automotive products. Acetic acid is used as a chemical intermediate to produce adhesives, paper, paints, plastics, resins, solvents, and textiles. MTBE, an oxygenate and octane enhancer, is used to reduce hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions from motor vehicles. Chemical intermediates are used to manufacture de-icer and windshield fluid, antifreeze, herbicides, pesticides, and poultry feed products. The company offers its products primarily to independent dealers, retail chains, cooperatives, and industrial customers. It also provides services to reduce nitrogen oxides and other emissions from various sources, including power plants and in other environmental processes, such as water treatment. The company was founded in 1964 and is headquartered in Sioux City, Iowa.
