As of June 30, 2005, Sunrise Senior Living operated 402 communities comprising 385 communities in the United States, 10 communities in Canada, 5 communities in the United Kingdom, and 2 communities in Germany, with a total resident capacity of approximately 48,000. It was also providing preopening management services to 38 communities under construction, as of the above date. The company was co-founded by Paul Klaassen and Teresa M. Klaassen in 1981. Sunrise Senior Living is headquartered in McLean, Virginia.
