The company's customers include fabless semiconductor companies, systems companies, and integrated device manufacturers. SMIC has strategic partnerships with Cadence Design Systems, Inc., Magma Design Automation, Inc., Mentor Graphics Corporation, Synopsys, Inc., Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited, and Toppan Printing Co., Ltd. The company was founded by Richard Ru-Gin Chang in 2000 and is headquartered in Shanghai, China.
