It operates in three segments: Scientific Research, Biotechnology, and Fine Chemicals. The Scientific Research segment offers biochemicals, organic chemicals, reagents, and other products to customers at universities, government institutions, and nonprofit organizations, as well as pharmaceutical, diagnostic, and biotechnology companies. The Biotechnology segment supplies immunochemical, cell culture, molecular biology, cell signaling, and neuroscience biochemicals and kits used in biotechnology, genomic, and proteomic research, as well as chromatography products used in life science research and technology applications. The Fine Chemicals segment offers large-scale organic chemicals and biochemicals used in the development and production by pharmaceutical, biotechnology, industrial, and diagnostic companies. The company operates in approximately 35 countries, offers 90,000 chemical and 30,000 equipment products, and sells these products in approximately 150 countries. Sigma-Aldrich was founded in 1951 and is based in St. Louis, Missouri.
