The company also sells Fast ForWord Language Basics product targeted to young children, four to seven years of age, and uses fun activities to develop visual attention, sound sequencing skills, and auditory discrimination skills; Reading Edge, a reading assessment instrument for students from kindergarten to second grade; and Fast ForWord Bookshelf, an early reading kit that includes five colorful storybooks and a multimedia CD-ROM. Its services include product training, technical installation, implementation management, consulting, and professional development services. The company also offers Fast ForWord Getting Started, a self-paced Web-based course that provides training on the science behind and the use of its products. It sells the products to K-12 school districts throughout the United States, using a direct sales force, as well as to clinical professionals, learning centers, hospitals, and clinics. The company also sells its products through school consortiums, regional service centers, and resellers. Scientific Learning was founded by Michael M. Merzenich, William M. Jenkins, Steven L. Miller, and Paula A. Tallal. The company was incorporated in 1995 under the name Scientific Learning Principles Corporation and changed its name to Scientific Learning Corporation in 1997. The company is headquartered in Oakland, California.
