Optelecom-NKF, Inc. provides integrated multimedia products for communicating video, audio, and other data through both copper wire and optical network systems. It operates through two segments, Communication Products and Electro-Optics Technology. The Communication Products segment engages in the development, manufacture, and sale of optical fiber-based data communication equipment to both commercial and government clients. It supplies solutions for highway traffic management, air traffic control, border surveillance, facilities security, and business video systems. This segment offers products in various categories, including data communications products, uncompressed digital video transmission products, course wavelength division multiplexer systems, high resolution red green blue video transmission products, and compressed digital video transmission products. The Electro-Optics Technology segment develops and manufactures optical devices under contract, primarily to government and defense industry customers. It fabricates precision-wound coils of optical fiber used as the sensing elements of fiber optic gyroscopes and for applications ranging from optical fiber dispensers used in remote vehicle control systems to precision optical fiber coils for communications systems. Optelecom-NKF sells its products through direct sales force, commercial integrators, and resellers. The company was organized in 1972. It was formerly known as Optelecom, Inc. and changed its name to Optelecom-NKF, Inc. in April 2005. Optelecom-NKF is headquartered in Germantown, Maryland.
