The company, through its 51% interest in 9Webzen Limited, operates ‘MU', a three-dimensional massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) that allows players to log on to network servers to ‘role-play' characters in a virtual world. The9 directly or through affiliates operates other licensed MMORPGs, including WoW and Mystina Online. It also has exclusive licenses to operate additional MMORPGs in China, including ZhiZun and Granado Espada. In addition, The9 developed its proprietary MMORPG titled ‘Joyful Journey West'. It also offers an online community game, the9 City. The company's other products and services include game operating support; Website solutions and advertisement services; SMS; and Pass9 system, its proprietary, integrated online membership management and payment system. The company was co-founded by Jun Zhu and Jie Qin. The9 was incorporated in 1999 under the name GameNow.net Limited and changed its name to The9 Limited in 2004. The company is headquartered in Shanghai, China.
