Koppers Holdings, Inc., through its subsidiaries, produces carbon compounds and treated wood products for the aluminum, railroad, specialty chemical, utility, rubber, and steel industries. It operates in two segments: Carbon Materials and Chemicals, and Railroad and Utility Products. Carbon Materials and Chemicals segment engages in the distillation of coal tar in North America, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Scandinavia. It distills coal tar and manufactures six principal products: carbon pitch, which is used in the production of aluminum and steel; phthalic anhydride used in the production of plasticizers and polyester resins; creosote, which is used in the treatment of wood or as a feedstock in the production of carbon black; carbon black used in the manufacture of rubber tires; naphthalene, which is used primarily as a surfactant in the production of concrete; and furnace coke used in steel and iron production. Railroad and Utility Products segment provides various products and services to railroads, including crossties, track panels and switch pre-assemblies, and disposal services. This segment also supplies treated wood poles to electric and telephone utilities; and performs various wood treating services for construction and other commercial applications. The company has operations in North America, Australasia, the People's Republic of China, Europe, and South Africa. Koppers Holdings, formerly known as KI Holdings, Inc., was founded in 1988 and is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
