W. R. Grace & Co. provides specialty chemicals and materials worldwide. It operates through two segments, Davison Chemicals and Performance Chemicals. The Davison Chemicals segment produces fluid cracking catalysts and additives used in petroleum refineries to convert distilled crude oil into transportation fuels and other petroleum-based products, as well as hydroprocessing catalysts that upgrade heavy oils and remove certain impurities. In addition, this segment provides silica-based engineered materials, such as silica gels, colloidal silicas, precipitated silicas, and zeolites/adsorbents used in various industrial, consumer, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical separations, as well as in edible oil refining and petrochemical processes; specialty catalysts, including polyolefin catalysts and catalyst supports used in the manufacture of polyethylene and polypropylene resins, and other chemical catalysts used in various industrial and consumer applications; and silica-based materials and chromatography columns and equipment for bioseparations, pharmaceutical, and other life sciences applications. The Performance Chemicals segment produces specialty construction chemicals, including concrete admixtures, cement additives, and additives for masonry products; specialty building materials, such as fireproofing and waterproofing materials and systems; and sealants and coatings for packaging that protect food and beverages from bacteria and other contaminants, extend shelf life, and preserve flavor. W. R. Grace & Co. was founded by William Russell Grace in 1854 and is headquartered in Columbia, Maryland. The company, and 61 of its United States subsidiaries and affiliates filed voluntary petitions for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code in 2001. They operate their businesses as debtors-in-possession.
