Digital Theater Systems, Inc. (DTSI) engages in the development, marketing, and license of digital audio technologies, products, and services to the motion picture, consumer electronics, professional audio, and related industries worldwide. It operates through two segments, Cinema and Consumer. The Cinema segment provides digital playback systems and cinema processor equipment to movie theaters and special venues; licenses technology to encode a movie's audio master into the company's digital multichannel format; and provides encoding and duplication services to film producers and distributors for the creation of digital multichannel motion picture soundtracks. It also provides audio compact disk read only memories for distribution with film prints to movie theaters, and systems and encoding services for preshow advertising, alternative content, subtitling, captioning, and descriptive narration. The Consumer segment licenses audio technology, trademarks, and know-how to consumer electronics, personal computer, broadcast, and audio companies. Its technology enables digital multichannel surround sound for home theater, home audio, and other segments of the consumer markets. The Consumer segment also produces and sells digital multichannel audio content by licensing titles from industry artists and remixing and releasing digital multichannel versions of these music titles. In addition, it offers various professional audio products and services, including audio/video receivers, digital versatile disk players, decoders that are embedded in audio/video devices, audio encoding devices, digital audio playback systems, audio processors, and cinema processors. DTSI also provides restoration and enhancement services for moving pictures captured on film or in digital form. The company markets its products and services through direct sales force and independent dealers. DTSI was founded by Terry Beard in 1990 and is headquartered in Agoura Hills, California.
