The company initiated a Phase II clinical trial with its lead small molecule product candidate, Arimoclomol for the treatment for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Arimoclomol received Orphan Drug and Fast Track designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. CytRx has also licensed from the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) the exclusive worldwide commercial rights to a novel DNA-based HIV vaccine technology, which demonstrated positive interim Phase I clinical trial results indicating its ability to produce potent antibody responses with neutralizing activity against multiple HIV viral strains. The company has a strategic alliance with UMMS to develop compounds in the areas of ALS, obesity, type II diabetes, and cytomegalovirus using RNAi technology, as well as a research program with Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University's teaching hospital, to use RNAi technology to develop a drug for the treatment of ALS. CytRx was incorporated in 1985 and is headquartered in Los Angeles, California.
