As of December 31, 2004, Peabody Energy owned and operated 32 mines in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia in the United States; and 4 in Queensland, Australia. As of same date, it had approximately 9.3 billion tons of proven and probable coal reserves, as well as approximately 300 million tons of coal reserves in Powder River Basin. The company was founded in 1883 and is based in St. Louis, Missouri.
