In addition, the company offers nondeposit investment alternatives, including discount brokerage services, fixed-rate and variable-rate annuities, mutual funds, and government and municipal bonds. As of December, 31, 2004, its subsidiaries operated approximately 1,400 banking offices in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Florida, Indiana, and Washington. The company was founded in 1906 and is headquartered in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
