The Medication Delivery segment provides various intravenous solutions and specialty products that are used in combination for fluid replenishment, general anesthesia, nutrition therapy, pain management, antibiotic therapy, and chemotherapy. The BioScience segment develops biopharmaceuticals, biosurgery products, vaccines and blood collection, and processing and storage products and technologies for transfusion therapies. The Renal segment develops products and provides services to treat end-stage kidney disease. The company's products are used by hospitals, clinical and medical research laboratories, blood and plasma collection centers, kidney dialysis centers, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, doctors' offices, and by patients at home under physician supervision. It distributes its products through independent distributors, drug wholesalers acting as sales agents, and specialty pharmacy or homecare companies. Baxter International has collaborative agreements with Nektar Therapeutics to develop PEGylated therapeutic forms of blood clotting proteins for patients with hemophilia, in order to reduce the frequency of injections required to treat blood clotting disorders, such as hemophilia; and with Lipoxen Technologies, Ltd. to develop longer acting therapeutic forms of blood clotting proteins. The company was founded in 1931 and is based in Deerfield, Illinois.
