The company operates in four segments: Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC), Microcontrollers, Nonvolatile Memories, and Radio Frequency and Automotive. ASIC segment offers semicustom application-specific ICs for the telecommunications, consumer, and military markets; application specific products for multiple customers, serving the imaging sensors and processors, as well as the wireless and wired data communications markets; smart card ICs for the telecommunications, banking and consumer markets; and programmable logic devices that serve the industrial, military, and computing markets. Microcontrollers segment includes proprietary and standard microcontrollers, including microcontrollers containing embedded nonvolatile memory. Nonvolatile Memories segment includes serial and parallel interface Flash memories, serial and parallel interface electrically erasable programmable read only memories, and erasable programmable read only memories. Radio Frequency and Automotive segment includes radio frequency and analog circuits for the telecommunications, automotive, and industrial markets. The company sells its products to original equipment manufacturers and distributors worldwide through manufacturers' representatives, and through international, national, and regional distributors. Atmel Corporation was founded in 1984 and is based in San Jose, California.
