As of December 31, 2004, it owned and operated 358 new vehicle franchises from 281 stores located in metropolitan markets in 17 states, principally in the Sunbelt region of the United States. The company was founded by H. Wayne Huizenga. It was formerly known as Republic Industries, Inc. and changed its name to AutoNation, Inc. in 1999. AutoNation is headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
