American Shared Hospital Services, through its subsidiary, provides Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery services to medical centers in the United States. The Gamma Knife, an alternative noninvasive procedure to conventional brain surgery, treats selected malignant tumors, benign brain tumors, arteriovenous malformations, and trigeminal neuralgia. The company also offers planning, installation, reimbursement, and marketing support services. As of April 28, 2005, it provided Gamma Knife units to 20 medical centers in Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin. American Shared Hospital was founded by Ernest A. Bates in 1980 and is based in San Francisco, California.
