SIG Oil Exploration and Production Index™ (EPXSM) is an equal dollar weighted index of 22 companies engaged in the exploration for and production of oil and natural gas. Because E&P company revenues are directly tied to resource production, they are highly sensitive to commodity prices and thus a good equity proxy for commodity movement. Other indexes that track oil companies, such as OSX and XOI, do not isolate this movement as precisely as EPX. The index is the underlying value for cash-settled options traded on the Philadelphia Stock Exchange (PHLX).
